I love our chickens and we only have a few at the moment but I am seriously looking at (once these girls get old) replacing them with one of the all rounders. Light Sussex are really good as a meat and egg bird. But for now we have a little layers and I am quite fond of them.
Today though is a sad day for some of our chickens we raised them up and now it is time for that table. We have done this many times over the years and then got right out of the way of doing it. When I started watching our budget and simplifying our life I decided to move back to what we used to do. We will have plenty of chicken for the next few weeks as we wait for our next group to grow. The girls are quite aware of it and understand why it happens it hasn’t turned them off meat at all.
I am seriously thinking of getting a couple of miniature goats. They come in different styles so I was looking at 2 does (to keep each other company) with the ability to produce milk and maybe fleece. Any kids that are produced I will wait to the appropriate age and use them as well. Nothing wasted.
