Crunchy chicken has thrown down a major challenge which got me thinking. yeah yeah I know that is really hard for me to do.
Anyway she has a list of things to give up ranging from plastic to electricity just for a week. I absolutely have to admit at first glance I thought no way. Not a chance, then I looked again and realised I do number 2 all the time. I don’t buy paper on a whole can go weeks without buying (unless it’s covering a product). Plastic is harder for me. Highly reduced but still I don’t seem to be able to get away from the packaging in breakfast cereals, bran and rolled oats. there are a few others still I don’t buy weekly but still how do we get rid of them? What do we store them in to keep the bugs out? At present my storage is limited so keeping it in the packaging helps me maintain the frshness.
To go without a car is very hard for me. I am out of town and need to purchase a trailer for my bike. which a present is not in the budget.
Last week 2 bags of rubbish went in the bin. The recycle bin was full to overflowing. but i am changing that as well. we get a lot of envelopes. I will reuse some as envelopes, others will be used as shopping lists before going through my shredder (manual) and used as mulch, worm food, chook bedding or tossed in my soon to be compost barrel. Get too much of it and i will hand it over to pet shops for their use.
Catalogues, boxes and other items will go to the local kindy. The only thing that i can see should go in the recycle bin at present is empty cans. K will not give up coke so this will be most of the cans. Bottles, I can wash and also send to the kindy, jars I reuse at home.
So what will your step be? Go the big challenge or go for a small step? Either way doing something will help.
